  4. Updates in release 1.6 of the GEN7 Desktop:

  6. Error or problem corrections:

  8.         1) Errors with the On-Screen clock were eliminated.
  9.         2) Copyrights and Compuserve IDs were updated.
  10.         3) The Accountant module passed beta test.
  11.         4) The music data distributed with the Bible Study
  12.            programs was corrected.
  13.         5) Small errors in the distributed batch files were
  14.            corrected.
  15.         6) The error in the /Xxxxxxxxx option was corrected,
  16.            Icons may be executed without a problem now.

  18. New Additions and updates:

  20.         1) G7BOOT.EXE was added to allow running external 
  21.            programs, and only approximately 9200 bytes 
  22.            of available program space is used!  When GEN7 
  23.            is reentered, it is restarted from scratch, but 
  24.            approximately 590K of free space exists in the 
  25.            DOS Shell when running programs or exitting to 
  26.            the shell (for a typical 640K system).  A batch
  27.            file: BOOTG7.BAT is used to start GEN7 in this
  28.            mode.  The old batch file: G7.BAT is still 
  29.            available, but approximately 150K of DOS free 
  30.            space exists if this option is used.  Beware:
  31.            do not try to run G7BOOT.EXE directly, or it
  32.            will not work as expected.
  33.         2) Microsoft Windows Icons may be specified when
  34.            installing user programs (external icons).
  35.         3) The file selection mask may specify more than
  36.            one file group.  Ex: *.COM *.EXE *.BAT may
  37.            be specified in the file selection mask to
  38.            select all COM, EXE and BAT files in the 
  39.            directories displayed.
  40.         4) The page number may be clicked with the mouse
  41.            in the help index to jump to a manual page.
  42.            Clicking on that spot while the index is not
  43.            displayed will accomplish the same thing
  44.            (jump to a general area of the manual by 
  45.            clicking that spot on the page).

  51.         1) Batch files may be executed from an icon without 
  52.            a hitch now.
  53.         2) Errors in the prompts when installing icons were
  54.            fixed.
  55.         3) Repaired an error in the Daily Quote function, 
  56.            after reaching the end, it loops to the beginning,
  57.            and it may be fully configured now.
  58.         4) An error in changing passwords was eliminated.
  59.         5) The 'Continue' button was pressed in the wrong
  60.            place on some of the warning boxes, etc.

  64.         1) Updated the Daily Quotes, added new categories.
  65.         2) Changed the password processing so only '*' are
  66.            echoed, instead of the actual text.
  67.         3) Added the capability to display the daily quotes
  68.            from the 'Daily Quote Menu' (submenu accessed from
  69.            Desktop / F6), and not just at startup.
  70.         4) Added ability to print Order Form, README files,
  71.            and Manual from Main Menu and at startup.
  72.         5) Added GEN7LOGO.PCX entry screen!
  73.         6) Updated GEN7.HLP to reflect new changes.
  74.         7) No features are disabled in the evaluation
  75.            version now.  The Daily Quote is fully functional,
  76.            and the /v (no voice), /q (run Daily Quotes only),
  77.            and the /a (run the Accountant only) options are
  78.            available within the evaluation version.

  85.         2) Batch files may be executed if copied to another machine.
  86.         3) Small typographical errors in the entry screens were
  87.            corrected.

  91.         1) Removed G7BOOT.EXE, and replaced it with G7LOADER.EXE.
  92.            G7LOADER was written in assembly language, and requires
  93.            only approx. 2800 bytes instead of the 9200 bytes that
  94.            G7BOOT required.  A safer linkage is used now, instead
  95.            of a text file.  It also supports a variable delay
  96.            factor on the Pause... prompt.

  102.         1) Elimiated dead code in GEN7, and reduced the size of the
  103.            daily quotes so GEN7G17.EXE and GEN7HD17.EXE may fit on
  104.            one 360K diskette.  All quotes are sent upon registration.

  110.         1) Corrected errors in the Program Manager relating to external
  111.            icons.  External icons are drawn properly now.
  112.         2) If 'NO' was selected at the exit prompt, the Program Manager
  113.            would crash.  Corrected same.

  119.         1) Added the /b option to direct voice output to the 
  120.            SoundBlaster card, if it is installed.  No other
  121.            changes need be made, just use the /b switch.

  127.         1) Added File Finder to locate any set of files on a disk volume.
  128.         2) Added Address book and phone dialer code.
  129.         3) Added Compression module (another $10 add-on module), that will
  130.            compress or decompress within the file manager using point and
  131.            click operation.
  132.         4) Added Spooler to use the resident DOS PRINT command to 
  133.            spool up to 10 files at a time with point and click operation.
  134.         5) Added Wallpaper backgrounds derived from *.BMP or *.ICO files.
  135.         6) Added external Screen Saver installable from File Manager.
  136.         7) Added view Icon and Wallpaper to Icon Operations submenu.
  137.         8) Added enhanced security to GEN7 password processing:
  138.             i)   Add user, change user, delete user may be performed by a 
  139.                  super user.  Multiple user GEN7!!!
  140.             ii)  Each operation in GEN7 is assigned a security level, and
  141.                  Group mask to restrict access to those features.
  142.             iii) Four groups are recognized: Pale Face, Tenderfoot, Brave
  143.                  and Chief (Super User).  The current group logged on is
  144.                  shown in the lower right corner under the GEN7 logo.
  145.             iv)  The installed programs to execute each have a security level
  146.                  and group mask to restrict their access.
  147.             v)   The Program Manager inherits the characteristics of the
  148.                  last user logged on to GEN7.
  149.         9) Added CMF player to the song player.  CMF files may be played in
  150.            the background if SBFMDRV.COM is installed, and GEN7 is run with
  151.            the /b option (G7SB.BAT).  
  152.        10) Added display of current song in the lower right hand corner.
  153.        11) Updated Program Manager to include a DOS Shell icon, for access
  154.            to the DOS Shell, and to process security information.
  155.        12) Added Desktop preferences menu item to the Desktop F6 menu.
  156.        13) Song Database now has over 100 *.CMF files with its registration.
  157.            A selection of 16 *.CMF songs comes with the standard system.
  158.        14) Faster startup of GEN7.
  159.        15) Smooth screen draw and redraw (use of two video pages).
  160.        16) Added /u option to force a user logon at startup.  Totally secure!

  164.         1) Executing external programs does not run out of file handles in
  165.            the child program.
  166.         2) When a program is executed, the directory the program resides in
  167.            is changed to upon execution.
  168.         3) The File Manager now saves the file box positions when a CMF file
  169.            is played.
  170.         4) Marking files in the File Manager did not work properly if 
  171.            files in alternate file boxes were selected.
  172.         5) Clicking upon the spot where the slider bar was when a file box
  173.            was open (but since closed) caused garbage on the screen.
  174.         6) Updated G7PMLOAD.EXE for changing directories upon executing
  175.            a child program.
  176.         7) The reviewing of memos at startup caused the memo to be deleted
  177.            if ESC was typed.
  178.         8) An error in the Math Tutor made the answer not show up on 
  179.            incorrect entries.

  185.         1) Added the 'Remove all:rm /r' selection to the F4 menu.  This 
  186.            allows removing a complete subtree of the directory structure
  187.            on any disk.
  188.         2) Changed GEN7 so it could accept an unlimited number of icons,
  189.            not just 48.
  190.         3) Made the same change to the GEN7 Program Manager so an unlimited
  191.            number of icons may be used.  When more than 31 icons is in the
  192.            configuration file, scroll buttons appear at the top of the display
  193.            so the icons may be paged through.
  194.         4) The GEN7 Program Manager now places a dialog box in the center of
  195.            the screen with buttons when exitting.

  197. Error or problem corrections:

  199.         1) An error in the spooler prevented files from being deleted from
  200.            the spool queue.
  201.         2) An error in the Phone / Address book could cause the computer to
  202.            crash if editting the address book.
  203.         3) The screen saver now is not entered when anything but the main screen
  204.            with fileboxes is displayed.  Upon return from the screen saver,
  205.            the correct screen was not redrawn before.  There may be some
  206.            exceptions to this, but it looks good now.

  208. Updates in release 1.9b of the GEN7 Desktop:

  212.         1) Added the song stack or queue, to play a number of songs back to
  213.            back, continuously.  Clicking upon the yellow song name in the 
  214.            lower right corner allows removal of a song from the queue, or
  215.            clearing the queue altogether.  With multiple select on, and the
  216.            Sound Blaster option (/b), all selected CMF files may be put into
  217.            the song queue automatically!  The Stop Music option now asks
  218.            if the song queue should be deleted if it is not empty.

  220. Error or problem corrections:

  222.         1) The GEN7 Program Manager did not allow options to be passed to 
  223.            GEN7 upon startup.  This prevented the use of the Sound Blaster,
  224.            for instance, and any other options desired, when GEN7 was run
  225.            from the Program Manager.
  226.         2) Rearranged the placement of the logo and program titles in the
  227.            lower right corner so the song name and user mode is not clipped.

  233.         1) Help balloons were added to the active elements of the desktop,
  234.            and the Calculator, and the Icon palettes.
  235.         2) Added the De/Encrypt File option to the F3 menu.
  236.         3) Made the Archive functions in a menu of their own.  Now the archive 
  237.            file to be the subject of listing, extractions, and updates 
  238.            is explicitly given.
  239.         4) Added the Delete Files option for the compression module, so files 
  240.            in a ZIP, ARC or LZH file may be deleted.

  242. Error or problem corrections:

  244.         1) Made GEN7 a bit less memory hungry.
  245.         2) Fixed an error at startup if the GEN7.CFG file was not present.  
  246.            This file will be optionally created now.
